When Custom Content Makes More Sense than Off-the-Shelf Content
Not every learning need needs a custom course, but sometimes “one-size-fits-all” fits nobody particularly well. Off-the-shelf content gives you the bricks; custom content helps build the house your people actually live in. The real trick is knowing when you need which.

Let’s be honest. There are few things more satisfying in L&D than finding a content library with thousands of ready-made courses.
Leadership? Covered. Communication skills? Covered. Project management? Covered. AI? Covered. Cybersecurity? Covered.
Need a course on giving feedback, managing stress, negotiating with stakeholders, or creating Excel formulas that look like they belong in a NASA control room? There’s probably a course for that too.
It’s no surprise that off-the-shelf content libraries have become a staple of many learning ecosystems. They’re fast, scalable, and cost-effective. And for many learning needs, they’re incredibly valuable.
But here’s the questions that often gets overlooked: Just because content exists, does it mean it’s the right content for your organisation?
Because while off-the-shelf content can solve many learning challenges, there are times when custom content isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity.
The Problem Isn’t Content Availability
A decade ago, many organisations struggled to access quality learning content. Today, the opposite problem exists.
Employees have access to more learning content than ever before. Thousands of courses, thousands of videos, and thousands of learning resources. Yet many organisations still find themselves asking “Why isn’t this translating into behaviour change?” or “Why doesn’t this feel relevant to our people?".
The answer often comes down to context.
People learn best when they can see themselves in the learning experience. And that’s where generic content sometimes reaches its limits.
Your Organisation is Not Generic
Every organisation has its own culture. Its own processes, own customers, own challenges, and its own way of doing things.
A leadership course may explain how to manage difficult conversations. But does it reflect the realities your managers face every day?
A compliance programme may explain policies. But does it incorporate the scenarios employees actually encounter?
A sales course may teach negotiation techniques. But does it address your products, customers, and market dynamics?
The more specific the learning objective becomes, the more valuable contextualisation becomes. Because employees are far more likely to engage with learning that feels relevant to their world.
When Compliance Requires More than Awareness
Compliance training is one area where custom content often delivers significant value.
Many organisations rely on generic compliance courses covering topics such as code of conduct, data privacy, information security, anti-bribery and corruption, and workplace ethics. These programmes are useful for creating awareness. However, awareness alone is rarely the goal.
Organisations need employees to understand how policies apply within their specific environment.
A healthcare organisation faces different risks than a financial institution. A logistic company faces different scenarios than a technology company. Custom content allows organisations to embed their policies procedures, risks, and real-world situations into the learning experience.
That makes the learning significantly more meaningful. And often more effective.
When Behaviour Change is the Goal
Knowledge transfer is relatively straightforward. Behaviour change is not.
If the objective is simply to provide information, off-the-shelf content can often do the job well. But when organisations are trying to change behaviours, influence decision-making, or shift workplace culture, custom content becomes much more valuable.
Examples include leadership development, customer service excellence, safety culture initiatives, diversity and inclusion programmes, organisational transformation, change management, and employee experience initiatives.
These topics are deeply connected to organisational context. The learning needs to feel authentic. Otherwise, employees quickly recognise it as “just another training course.”
And we all know how that story usually ends.
When Your Processes Matter
Imagine assigning a course on project management. The course teaches excellent principles. The methodologies are sound. The examples are relevant.
The only problem? Your organisation follows completely different processes.
Employees leave the course with useful knowledge but limited understanding of how to apply it internally. This is a common challenge.
Many organisations have unique workflows, systems, service standards, operational procedures, customer journeys, and quality frameworks. Custom learning content allows organisations to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
Employees don’t just learn what good looks like. They learn what good looks like inside their organisation.
When You Need Learning to Support Change
Organisational change often fails for a surprisingly simple reason. People don’t understand what is changing or why.
Whether it’s digital transformation, AI adoption, process redesign, restructuring, or a new strategic direction, employees need support navigating uncertainty.
Generic content can explain contents. Custom content an explain your transformation.
That’s a powerful difference.
Because change becomes much easier when employees understand why the change matters, what is expected of them, how their role is evolving, and what success looks like. This is one area where custom content often delivers some of the highest business value.
It’s Not Custom vs Off-the-Shelf
One of the biggest misconceptions in workplace learning is that organisations must choose one approach. In reality, the most successful learning ecosystems use both.
Off-the-shelf content excels at foundational knowledge, professional development, digital skills, leadership concepts, and industry best practices.
Custom content excels at organisational context, internal processes, behaviour change, culture initiatives, strategic priorities, and business-specific challenges.
Think of it like building a house. Off-the-shelf content provides the bricks. Custom content helps shape the home. Both have a role to play.

Because the best content isn’t necessarily the content with the highest production value. It’s the content that helps employees think differently, act differently, and perform better.
And sometimes, the most powerful learning experience is one that feels like it was built specifically for them. Because it was.
